Article Marketer – Article Marketing Science and the Resource Box
By Johnny S Johnson
Article marketing is tough stuff. People don’t like to read and they certainly don’t like to waste their time reading things they won’t need to know. That’s why the resource box at the end of an article is so important. It lets people know that the awesome article they just finished skimming through was written by an equally awesome writer who’s written other awesome content on the same topic. Sometimes a resource a box is called a “Sig” because it acts as the author’s signature on their work. It contains everything that anyone would ever need to know about the writer and his relevant works. This is one important aspect that an article marketer needs to focus on.
Commonly, resource boxes include some very basic things, such as the name and website. Those are givens. The next thing to include is a short description of what your article offers that no one else has. 100 people may have written an article about pineapples, but if you’re the only one with a Pina Colada recipe, don’t make people read 100 articles to find that out! Once you’ve done this, you can include what’s called a “call to action,” a single request for the reader to get in touch with you, go to your website, read more, or generally do that one thing that will convince them to invest in you as a writer. After all, this is why you’re an article marketer.
So what else can you add to make your article even more enticing? You can expand your contact information by including telephone and fax numbers or your email address. Don’t put too much though, as you never know how far that article is going to wander into the public sphere. You might also offer more of your work through an Ezine subscription or free report. Someone who is very clever about article marketing can try bumping up the search rate of their articles by adding a key word. This can start to look sloppy though, if not done subtly. In many cases, the less extra stuff in your resource box, the better.
In fact, there are a lot of things you might be tempted to do in your resource box that will do nothing but hinder your article marketing goals. Adding several URL’s, for example, or qualifications will make your resource box seem like a big time waster. The resource box is not the place for a condensed resume. It’s also not the place for advertisements, even if they relate directly to you as the author. People reading through the resource box are interested in the article and your ability to write it only. A reasonable resource box should be at most a fifth of the length of each of the marketing articles you write.
It’s tempting, when someone is poised to read an article chock full of what you’ve got to say, to add a lot more information that you personally find valuable. Many people see the resource box as a billboard to splatter their achievements on. The proper way to see the sig, perhaps, is as a billboard; people are driving by and have time to read one line and chase down one URL. You don’t need a lot of fancy programming skills to be successful at article marketing, but you do need to understand how your readers feel. As an article marketer, focus on the reader’s interests, not your own. It’s fair for you to let them know who you are and what you’ve done, but it’s not fair for you to sit them down for a summer vacation slide-show just because they liked your article on mufflers.
